A happy novel, « Jane Eyre » received considerable appraise on its release. And a great impact. Yet, the story shows, at first sight, all the typical elements of the romantism at the time and not free of literary stereotypes : pity for child abuse, a gloomy orphanage, the misery of solitude, etc. But there was also a new element that rended the book quite different : the nature of its heroine, very first representation of a self-conscious woman with her own will, her dignity and her feelings. A fully modern woman who acts, speaks and moves in complete accordance with her rights and duties. Heroic without bravada, proud without arrogance, honest without tears, lover without lust. A character we could meet today, in a world so tormented and so thirsty of ideals.
