Hippolyte Bibard, after being demoted three times, is suddenly transferred to Casablanca: "From November 14 on, at the disposal of Commander Féroud". The latter is none other than Mehmet Pacha, a French officer who has converted to Islam and who is veneered throughout the Muslim world, from the Nile to the Euphrates. He is a brave, wily, cruel, secretive and subtle man who fascinates Hippolyte, without earning his sympathy. That is until Bibard meets Violette, the person who both weakens and humanizes Mehmet Pacha. From then on, conflict is unavoidable between the two men.
