MARTHE
a film by Jean-Loup Hubert 1997

Wounded in the trenches some place in Argonne at the beginning of fall 1915, Simon and some of his companions are transferred to a hospital. Away from the battle line. A place out of this world, a peninsula of sand and rocks stranded between sky and the sea. A peaceful universe for those soldiers who came back from an abyss where they thought they would be swallowed into... Here, the wounds may healed and the men begin to revive, to life, to their desires, to their dreams. A few weeks of recovery, a few months, before most of them will have to go back to war. A respite, a moment in time where everything can be increased, lived in absolute, to escape the vertigo of death. Simon will meet Marthe, and he will love her beyond everything else. He lives.
